JOB SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, leads echocardiography technicians in performance of assigned tasks. Performs vascular and echocardiography ultrasound examinations for patients.
The following duties are intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities and ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
Supervises technical exams and performs vascular and echocardiography ultrasound examinations. Performs ongoing Cardiovascular Technology staff and intern teaching and cross training. Serves as on-call technologist. Cleans and sterilizes equipment and workspace. Recognizes equipment malfunctions and readjusts equipment or refers for repair. Trains and cross-trains other clinical staff as required. Instructs patients in pretest preparation, answers questions and explains procedures.
Echocardiography: Performs high quality, technically diagnostic echocardiograms including a qualitative and quantitative two dimensional, continuous, pulsed and color flow Doppler, as well as M-mode examinations. Notifies the cardiologist of urgent conditions demonstrated on echos performed. Administers contrast as needed for better visualization of wall segments and performs bubble studies. Proficiency in starting IV’s is preferred for Definity and bubble studies. Obtains diagnostic wall motion information in a timely fashion (generally less than 90 seconds) on both stress and dobutamine echocardiography. Prepares the patient for transesophageal echocardiography, educates them about the procedure and be sufficiently skilled with the equipment to assist the cardiologist in obtaining a high quality study.
Vascular Ultrasound: Performs diagnostically adequate examinations of various arteries and veins. Locates and records internal elements of the body such as vessels, organs and tissues; and displays their position and function. Identifies any anomaly indicative of disease, injury, or other medically significant condition of the blood vessels from ultrasound imaging and simultaneous recordings of the Doppler.
EKGs: Performs EKGs as requested. Properly prepares skin, apply electrodes, limit artifact and operate equipment sufficiently to obtain high quality tracings. Brings emergent abnormalities to physician’s attention.
Exercise Tolerance Tests: Explains procedure and its risks to patients, and obtains informed consent. Performs proper skin preparation and electrode/wire placement to minimize artifact. Monitors patient’s blood pressure at required intervals and patient’s symptoms constantly. Inquiries and records patient’s cardiac medications and when last taken. Brings abnormalities to physician’s attention as required.
Patient Education: Instructs patients in correct pretest preparation. Obtains signed consent for exercise tolerance tests and stress echocardiogram. Independently and thoroughly instructs patients on each test performed to assure compliance and to guarantee a good quality test.
Adjusts equipment and calms patient to eliminate test artifacts. Monitors the patient for potentially dangerous physical and emotional changes. Recognizes abnormal rhythms and immediately notifies physician. Evaluates test results for clarity and accuracy; reviews tests with peers. Informs physicians of preliminary findings as requested, and according to Department procedures. Distributes completed test results to physicians and service providers. Maintains patient charts, enters diagnosis and billing codes, logs data into patient information systems, and updates file systems for tests performed. Manages billing process for Cardiovascular Technology Department. Prepares yearly budget entries.
Lead Duties: Provides leadership, direction, and guidance to assigned staff. Develops goals and priorities in conjunction with employees, and assigns tasks and projects. Develops staff skills and training plans. Counsels, trains, and coaches subordinate staff. Implements corrective actions and conducts performance evaluations. Responsible for the general hiring and supervision of the technical staff and management of day-to-day operations. Plans the delivery of the overall program and ensures echo/vascular lab is compliant with all regulatory, quality, and patient safety policies and procedures. Fulfill ICAEL, ICAVL requirements to establish, retain and maintain accreditation of the lab. Responsible for technical staff yearly performance evaluations. Assume interim management of nurses and other clinic staff in absence of other managers. Attend administrative meetings to provide input from the clinical level and reports findings to the chief cardiologist as necessary. Implements any changes and reports back to committee as to effectiveness of changes.
Writes annual capital equipment budgetary requests for the upcoming fiscal year. Obtains necessary quotes for equipment and service contracts. Negotiates new equipment and trade in prices. Coordinates with inventory specialists and biomedical department to get appropriate inventory control tags and safety checks on new equipment. Schedules in-service training for staff on new equipment.
Writes call schedule and submit to ANMC operator in a timely fashion. Notifies operator by email of any changes to call schedule or staff contact numbers. Works with materials management to maintain list of current inventory. Excess any equipment no longer in use by department. Reviews testing protocols as well as policy and procedure manuals to make sure they are accurate and up to date. Coordinates schedule and maintains good communications with medical director and cardiologists to assure a smooth flow of patients through the clinic.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of cardiac defibrillator, Holter monitor equipment, event recorders and other medical electronics and stress testing equipment.
Skill in monitoring patient responses and operating defibrillator equipment.
Skill in leading staff of medical technologists.
Skill in communicating with all organizational levels.
Skill in performing vascular and echocardiogram ultrasound testing procedures.
Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.


Associate’s Degree in diagnostic ultrasound or related field. Progressively responsible professional work-related experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education. LEAD CARDIOVASCULAR SONOGRAPHER MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Non-supervisory – Five (5) years of echocardiography/vascular experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.
Supervisory - One (1) year involving employee supervision.
Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers is required. Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer/Registered Cardiac Sonographer and Registered Vascular Sonographer/Registered Vascular Technologist required.
May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule. May be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations.
The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Must be able to lift approximately 20 pounds.
ANMC is not a latex free environment. Therefore, some latex exposure can be expected.
