USA Health — the region’s only academic health system — is expanding its interventional radiology services along the Gulf Coast to care for the unique needs of our community. The Department of Radiology at the University of South Alabama Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine and USA Health are seeking an innovative and collaborative Division Chief of Vascular and Interventional Radiology to lead and guide the growth of a dynamic academic IR division serving the vibrant Gulf Coast region.
This is an exciting opportunity to shape a comprehensive, system-managed IR service line that spans three hospitals and a growing network of outpatient and specialty centers across coastal Alabama. The Division of Interventional Radiology serves USA Health University Hospital, USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital, USA Health Providence Hospital, and the USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute. Together, the three hospitals and standalone clinics are licensed for over 700 beds and include an ACS-verified Level 1 trauma center.

Responsibilities include clinical coverage of the interventional radiology service, instruction of medical students and residents in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, and the pursuit of academic interests and research. The Division integrates and performs all aspects of IR including spinal augmentation, women’s health, hepatobiliary disease, trauma, dialysis access maintenance, vascular disease, and interventional oncology, serving both an academic and regional referral population.
The successful candidate will work closely with departmental and health system leadership to:
- Define standards of practice and clinical pathways
- Build subspecialty programs across the system
- Strengthen our teaching and research missions within the USA College of Medicine
- Provide a foundation of leadership and strategies for growth

Chief of IR Qualifications
- Required Education and Expertise: MD or DO degree. ABR Certified and fellowship trained with Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Interventional Radiology. A license to practice medicine in Alabama is required upon hire
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in Interventional Radiology, preferably in an academic medical center or academic setting
- Key Skills: Ability to grow a division from the ground-up with potential to oversee as many as (8) physicians. Commitment to clinical excellence, innovation, and mentorship
- Key Attributes: A charismatic academic leader who supports the strategic priorities and mission of the health system
